"NYLF National Security allowed me to talk with and learn from high ranking government officials as well as high ranking military officers. One of these conversations greatly impacted my choice to pursue my military career path. I am proud to say I will have the opportunity to attend the US Naval Academy as well as serve this nation that I love dearly."

I attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference as a sixth grade student and the NYLF National Security as a junior, both in Washington, D.C. After graduation in May 2015, I will be attending the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. I plan to study mathematics during my time there and hope to pursue a career in naval aviation. The process of applying to the USNA is long and very in-depth. I am now using my time becoming better informed about the Naval Academy, refining my academic skills, and preparing physically.

Q&A with Parker

  • What was the highlight of your Envision experiences?

The highlight of my NYLF National Security experience was touring the Pentagon while attending NYLF National Security. It was intriguing and very inspiring to be in the building where prominent figures have walked, talked and made crucial decisions greatly affecting our country.

  • What was the most important thing that you learned while attending?

I learned the importance and benefit of being surrounded by others with the same interests and goals as you. It was very rewarding and humbling to be surrounded by great students from around the country. You have no idea how much you can learn and how much you can grow intellectually by being surrounded by other individuals that have the same passions and future goals as you.

  • How was attending an Envision program different than learning in a traditional classroom?

In a traditional classroom, you are merely told what you should and need to learn. Envision programs allow you to be in the middle of what you’re learning. I was able to learn, have fun, and grow as an individual all while experiencing some of the greatest days and seeing some of the greatest sights of my life.

  • Do you feel that NYLF National Security helped you decide which on your currently military career path?

NYLF National Security allowed me to talk with and learn from high-ranking government officials as well as high-ranking military officers. The knowledge I gained from these fine adults provided a driving force for the goals I have accomplished and still want to accomplish. One of these goals is going to the United States Naval Academy (USNA). This goal was sparked after speaking to one specific Captain in the United States Navy who happened to be a graduate of USNA. He described the opportunities and privileges presented by the Academy as well as the Naval Service. This conversation greatly impacted my choice to pursue my military career pathway. I am proud to say I will have the opportunity to attend the Academy as well as serve this nation that I love dearly.

  • What would you tell other students who are interested in attending an Envision program?

Do it! I remember I was nervous when I went to the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in 6th grade. However, looking back now it was one of the most rewarding events of my life. When presented with the opportunity to go to NYLF National Security as a junior, I jumped at the chance because of my experience five years earlier.

You will not regret attending an Envision program, I promise you that. I encourage you to go, have fun, make friends, and most importantly gain knowledge and experience that you will be able to apply in your school, in your community and in your life, now and in the future.
