Makumbi M.

Alumnus, Global Young Leaders Conference 2014

I am a student, an entrepreneur, and an aspiring graphic designer from Zambia. I believe everyone should have equal opportunities regardless of background or status. It is my wish to study graphic design in the United States at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and to continue to successfully run my company, Cyber Graffiti. Attending GYLC helped me to realize that as a leader of tomorrow, I need to prepare for global challenges and responsibilities.

Q&A with Makumbi

  • What inspires you as a young leader?

I am inspired to change the world by providing opportunities for people and by learning from the failures and successes of past generations. For had it not been for their sacrifices and dreams, we wouldn't have been given the opportunities we have, like experiencing an Envision program.

  • What was the highlight of your Envision experience?

Interacting with people of different cultures was an amazing experience. Understanding and appreciating so many cultures from across the globe helped me break down stereotypes and made me see past barriers, such as race and language. It united us for a common goal, which is to be the foundation stone for tomorrow's generation.

  • How was attending the program different than learning in a traditional classroom?

It was a multicultural environment which created an atmosphere of diverse ideas and opinions. This type of environment broadened my mind and provoked critical thinking, which does not always occur in a traditional classroom.

  • What are you doing now?

Earlier this year, together with my school, I volunteered at a special school called Mambilima, which is mainly for children with disabilities. It's located in Luapula province which is in Zambia. One of my company's aims is to give back to the community. We will do this through development projects and by sponsoring kids.

  • What would you tell other students who are interested in attending an Envision program?

I would tell them how it fundamentally changes the way you view the world. I would also tell them about the benefits - such as college credit and cross cultural communication skills. Attending GYLC allows you to view the world, and its issues, from several perspectives. I would also share that you are becoming a representative of your country (a great achievement) and will establish long term friendships. Plus, you have options to choose from: US, Europe and China!
