Suture Course/Kit (equivalent of 25 shadowing hours)
Learning how to suture wounds and lacerations requires a thorough understanding of the theory of wound care and the basic principles of suturing. The course is not intended to substitute the clinical training of students but rather to offer a firm foundation and an opportunity to experience their initial learning curve in an imitation situation –to fill the student with confidence when they are faced with the real-life clinical situation. The student also needs to reach an advanced level of proficiency by practicing knot tying and suturing techniques. The course consists of 5 sections:
- The Suturing Kit
- Preparatory Projects
- Surgical Knot Tying
- Basic Principles of Wound Care
- Basic Suturing Techniques
Venipuncture Course/Kit (equivalent of 30 shadowing hours)
This is an illustrated, hands-on, self-paced, online course which includes all the instruments and items needed. A basic understanding of general human (or veterinary) anatomy and physiology, especially the cardiovascular system, is required in order to understand and safely apply the techniques that the student will learn. Every “simple” venipuncture procedure is, in essence, a minor surgical procedure governed by the basic principles of surgery:
- Have a comprehensive understanding of basic medical sciences, especially anatomy and physiology of the relevant areas and systems.
- Follow the basic principles of sterility and asepsis, including the use of barrier techniques.
- Take a medical history and interpret this information to modify your treatment plan.
- Use good lighting.
- Respect life and bodily tissues.
- Perform the procedure in a humane and professional manner.
- Anticipate the possibility of complications and deal with them promptly and effectively.
Stop the Bleed Course/Kit (equivalent of 25 shadowing hours)
The objectives of this course are to give members of the public (without medical background/training) a good understanding of the different types of bleeding and then enable them to practice and perfect the relevant skills to stop or significantly reduce bleeding. Additionally, the course teaches medical and healthcare professional students the basic principles of bleeding, hemostasis, shock, and how to control and/or stop bleeding in the emergency as well as in a medical environment.
Control Bleeding Course students will gain knowledge and an understanding of:
- Vascular anatomy
- Physiology of blood, blood volume, blood pressure, and blood clotting
- Methods to control bleeding in both the emergency and controlled medical settings
- Surgical shock
- Restoring hypovolemia
