Make Your Creative Mark on the World

NYLF Film & Journalism, in collaboration with New York City's renowned St. John’s University, offers high school students a fantastic opportunity to explore the relationship between media and society — and to discover the exciting world of mass communications.

Guided by the award-winning professors in St. John’s Division of Mass Communication, you will benefit from an interactive curriculum that helps you to develop and practice essential skills needed for success in the media industry. Choose your own area of concentration. Gain a head-start in your media career by examining the five- step film development process, or practicing the art of communication and journalism through the lens of current events.

Your time at NYLF Film & Journalism will result in a tangible portfolio, a fully edited short interview for a documentary film, or a feature story for a TV news segment, that you can use when applying for college or a job in the field.

Experience and Growth


Learn about the various types of film productions and how elements like the five-step development process, common shooting techniques, and pre- and post-production editing methods help to shape the tone and meaning of a film.




Discover the elements of journalism through the lens of current events. Learn how to formulate ethical interview questions, develop the visual vocabulary of television news, and effectively use your smart device to distribute information across all collaborative communication channels, like social media.

  • Is the National Youth Leadership Forum: Film & Journalism for me?

    This summer program is for you if you are a high school student interested in exploring various careers involving the broadcast of video and audio, digital production, journalism, film editing and more. NYLF Film & Journalism is your springboard to achieving tremendous success in college and in a future digital media career. 

    To attend NYLF Film & Journalism, you must be in grades 9-11 during the 2018-2019 school year. Many of our students are nominated by educators, leaders from youth organizations and participating institutions, but open enrollments are welcome from qualified high school students who want to make the most of this opportunity.

  • What is included in tuition?

    Your tuition for NYLF Film & Journalism includes housing, an average of two meals a day, supervisory personnel, program materials, all program activities, site visits, a Certificate of Completion and local transportation during the program.

    However, your transportation to and from home and the program location is NOT included in tuition. While attending the program, you will only need money for off-campus meals, souvenirs, snacks and other incidentals.

  • How will I be supervised?

    Your safety and well-being during the program is our highest priority. The program is structured so that you will reside in a safe, controlled environment. You will be closely supervised by professionally trained staff, including advisors who serve as educational facilitators and chaperones, security personnel, the scholar experience team, and program leads.

    For over 30 years, Envision has achieved a stellar record of safely and successfully enriching the lives of students, providing them with superb educational experiences and professional supervision. Other Envision safety measures include:

    • Greeting students at the designated airport upon their arrival, and providing shuttle service directly to the program site as well as providing shuttle service back to the airport on departure day*
    • Maintaining a student-to-staff ratio of 17 to 1
    • Providing single-sex rooms and single-sex floors
    • Requiring all students to attend all activities
    • Checking rooms nightly and ensuring that students remain in their rooms
    • Having night monitors in place to support students who may become ill or who have an emergency during the night
    • Equipping all staff members with two-way communication devices

    * There is a $70 nonrefundable roundtrip fee for shuttle service or a $35 fee for one-way shuttle service.

  • Where will I stay?

    For the summer 2019 NYLF Film & Journalism program, you will reside on the main campus of St. John's University in Queens, New York City. 

  • How many students share a room?

    Each room is a suite style, housing two students to a room, and shares a bathroom with another room. You will have your own bed.

  • Can my parents attend the program?

    No. Your parents or guardians are not allowed to accompany you during the program. Gaining independence, including experiencing new things on your own, is an essential part of your growth during the program. However, it is perfectly fine for your family to travel with you to the program location and stay in the area while you are attending the program.

  • Can I attend if I am a student with special needs?

    Yes. If you are a student with special needs or with disabilities, we encourage you to enroll. We may be able to provide you with auxiliary aids and services to assist you. Please call our Office of Admissions for more information or to discuss your particular needs prior to enrolling in the program.

  • Can special dietary needs be met?

    We make every effort to meet the dietary needs of all our students, provided the request is submitted prior to the start of the conference. When you complete the Student Information Form, you will have the opportunity to make special dietary requests.
