School Library Month
How are you commemorating School Library Month in April? With a good book recommended by a librarian, we hope! The American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) celebrates the 30th anniversary of School Library Month, spotlighting libraries, librarians and the role they play in education.
This year’s theme, “Your School Library: Where Learning Never Ends,” highlights all of the work librarians do to promote a love of reading as well as sharing all of the exciting new research tools and ways librarians can make learning fun. School librarians are encouraged to submit and showcase the work done in their library so others can learn from them.
In addition to School Library Month in April, April 12-18 is also National Library Week, highlighting how libraries have contributed to our nation and continue to adapt to better serve their communities. The theme for 2015 is “Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library®,” and celebrations will include National Library Workers Day, National Bookmobile Day and Celebrate Teen Literature Day.
If you and your students are interested in celebrating library’s and librarians, here are a few ideas to join the fun:
- Check out ILoveLibraries – a great resource from the American Library Association on libraries, nominating your favorite librarian for awards and recommended book lists for all ages.
- Have your class create a card or poster thanking your school librarian!
- Collaborate with your school librarian on a project or learn about new technology your students can use in the classroom.
- Have your students create bookmarks about one of their favorite literary characters.
- Have your school librarian submit ideas to the School Librarian Showcase to share what awesome programs they are running in your school.
