Martin Luther King Jr. Day: What Makes a Great Leader?

        blog_mlk_full

Every January we pay homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most influential leaders the world has ever known. In addition to celebrating Dr. King’s tireless and inspirational work to advance the civil rights movement in the United States, this is also a great time to think about our own contributions as leaders in our schools and communities.

Dr. King’s work continues to serve as a model of leadership excellence. It is astounding how he was able to rally people to support his equal rights cause, making the world a better place for us all. He was driven, charismatic and willing to do whatever it took to make a difference.

How can we – as students, teachers and parents – embrace these qualities? Here are some ideas:

Work on personal leadership skills. Unfortunately, the ability to resolve conflict, make decisions and set goals are not inherent traits we are born with. But these traits can be developed. Dr. King mastered these skills and he did so without alienating others. This is what sets great leaders a part from the rest.

Build self-confidence. Even the most influential leader isn’t perfect. We are all flawed human beings. What makes great leaders rise above their shortcomings is their belief that they can succeed. When you believe you can do it, you are willing to go after it. Dr. King’s self-confidence shines through in his I Have a Dream speech.

Embrace collaboration. No one becomes great in a bubble. Leaders tap into the tremendous power of teams. They understand that the team’s ability to work together is just as important as who is on the team.

Develop passion. What motivates someone to pursue greatness? For many of the world’s greatest leaders, it isn’t money or fame. It’s a never-ending desire to make a difference. Great leaders are driven by passion.

Persevere. Great leaders such as Dr. King often have to forge a difficult and time-consuming path to success. A great leader doesn’t shy away or give up when faced with a big job. It is what is expected and they are ready to take on the challenge - big or small.

Put others first. Successful leaders seek to promote the welfare of others. They genuinely want to help others, which is why many great leaders lend their influence and support towards important global causes.

This MLK Day, take some time to honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King. There are many ways to participate in the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, including local activities that are taking place in your community. But also take time to think about your own leadership abilities and ways you can put your passions to work for the good of others.
