Dr. Mae Jemison

2015 Keynote Speaker, NYLF Explore STEM

Intrigued by science, astronomy and engineering at an early age, Dr. Mae Jemison received a degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University and then an M.D from Cornell University Medical College. In addition to being a general practitioner and Peace Corps medical officer, she has served as science mission specialist on the space shuttle Endeavor, where she studied the effects of weightlessness and motion sickness on the crew.

Among Dr. Jemison’s impressive accomplishments:

  • Head of the Black Student Union at Stanford
  • Worked at a Cambodian refugee camp in Thailand
  • Author of several books on science and space exploration
  • 1988 Essence Science and Technology Award
  • Ebony Black Achievement Award in 1992
