Q&A With Joseph S.

  • What is the most memorable moment of your program experience?

The day that we travelled to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where we had the opportunity to practice a virtual laparoscopic surgery on simulation machines and work with the simulation dummies that doctors and medical students use in training and practice.

  • How did your program experience helped you focus on a career path?

One of the speakers at my program was Lisa Russell, a filmmaker who makes films focused on public health issues around the world. Her presentation was the first time I had heard of the field of public health, and I knew immediately that it was something I wanted to pursue professionally.

  • How was attending the program different than learning in a traditional classroom?

The program provided us with so many opportunities that would not be afforded in a traditional classroom. We learned about medical systems, talked through case studies, and discussed the process of becoming a medical professional. We also got to hear from and talk to medical students, doctors, and other health professionals who gave us invaluable insight into the medical field.

  • How has your program experience impacted your life and your future?

Through my program I learned about the field of public health, which is something I have decided I want to spend the rest of my life studying. Without the program, I'm not sure when I would have learned of the field of public health.

  • What would you tell other students who are interested in attending an Envision program?

I would tell prospective attendees that the program would provide them with insight and knowledge about the medical field that can't be gained in a traditional classroom. Being able to discuss medicine and healthcare with medical students and professionals is the best way to navigate potential career options for the future.
