Nominate for NYLF: Engineering & Technology
Building a Better Tomorrow

At the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Engineering, your students will be introduced to the overarching principles of engineering, including the design thinking process and how it, along with other key concepts, can be applied across a variety of engineering disciplines. Over eight days on the campus of a top-ranked engineering school—either the University of California, Berkeley or Georgia Tech—your students will explore their passions while being exposed to the vast array of engineering professions. In addition, they will gain access to cutting-edge labs and facilities and apply their newfound skills to assist with achieving some of the Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the United Nations.

NYLF Engineering Curriculum

Students attending NYLF Engineering The forum’s curriculum is designed to provide motivated students with the opportunity to explore a future career and get a leg up on the competition. Students gain academic and career insights into engineering fields through informative seminars, interactive simulations and workshops, and challenges that require students to apply their newfound skills to create low-cost, sustainable solutions.

Capstone Impact Challenge

During this competitive design challenge, students work to solve a real-world problem. After analyzing the challenges and constraints, the students utilize their creativity and various technologies, such as ArcView GIS, to plan, ideate, and prototype a solution. The challenge culminates in a multi-round presentation where the best solutions are determined.

Career Immersion

Students experience the full life cycle of an actual engineering project and gain insights from engineers who were integral to its execution and delivery. During this real-life engineering experience, students actively explore all phases of product creation as they participate in small group workshops and hands-on stations while receiving instruction from an engineer who worked on the project.

Speaking Engagements

Students hear from academic faculty and professional leaders in various engineering disciplines during speaking events and visits to engineering facilities. These interactions with subject matter experts provide them with insight into recent innovations in engineering and the keys to achieving a successful future career in this dynamic field.

Health & Safety: Our Top Priority

The health and safety of our students is, and always will be, our top priority. We are currently evaluating all aspects of our programs and incorporating the most up-to-date health and safety standards. We will continue to make changes as new learnings and guidance evolve from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our program partners. For the most up-to-date answers to FAQs and procedural details highlighting our COVID-19 protocols, visit our COVID Health & Safety page.
Helicopter Electronics Workshop

Applying electronics concepts, your students will program a microcontroller to independently fly a model helicopter in this activity developed by Andrew Barry, Ph.D., a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) grad and Founder of Stage One Education.

The helicopter workshop manages to pack the best parts of robotics—circuits, programming, and autonomous control—into an amazingly fun package.

The Impact of Nominating

Since 1985, Envision by WorldStrides has helped more than 800,000 high-achieving students, ranging from elementary school through college, expand their leadership abilities, discover their passion for a future career, and realize the power of their potential. A majority of those students were nominated by caring, inspiring teachers who recognized their potential for a bright future and rewarded them with a nomination to an Envision program.

The value and positive impact your nomination has on a student cannot be overstated. Even if your nominees decide not to attend a program, just being selected is an empowering and often a life-changing event. You have the power to make an impact—your vote of confidence in their hard work and dedication builds confidence and inspires them to keep reaching their goals.

Additional Information

  • Supervision

For over 30 years, Envision by WorldStrides has made the safety and well-being of each student during the forum our highest priority. NYLF Engineering is directed by a full-time staff of professional educators, and students are supervised by Advisors and Envision team members at a low student-to-staff ratio. Attendance is taken throughout the forum and all students are required to attend all activities.

A member of our Envision team is on location and available 24 hours a day via cell phone and email for any parent who has questions or requires information at any time.

  • Location and Travel

Attendees will be housed on the campus of either the University of California, Berkeley or Georgia Tech, based on which location they decide to attend. Nightly room checks will be performed by professional staff members, who will be available 24 hours a day.

Private motor coaches provide all transportation between the forum site and program activities. No public transportation will be used during the forum.

  • College Credit

Students who complete NYLF Engineering are eligible to receive two college credits through George Mason University. While the average cost of one college credit at a four-year institution is $600, the total cost of both NYLF Engineering credits is just $200. Students may apply for this credit by selecting the College Credit option during the online enrollment process.

  • Selection

Envision by WorldStrides seeks to identify students who demonstrate leadership potential, have a history of academic achievement, and will contribute to the strength and character of NYLF Engineering—outstanding individuals representing a variety of backgrounds and possessing an interest in the field of engineering. Envision also hopes to attract the most mature and independent individuals possible. Educators are asked to nominate high school students who can meet the challenge of our academic curriculum and who merit the distinction of a nomination.

  • Tuition

Tuition includes all housing; instruction and supervision by professional Advisors; conference activities and site explorations; conference materials; two to three meals per day; and private motor-coach transportation to all locations during the conference. Transportation to and from the program city is not included in conference tuition. Students will only need money for one to two off-site meals, snacks, and incidentals they wish to purchase.

  • Scholarships

Do not hesitate to nominate students who can benefit from this program but who have limited financial resources. Envision by WorldStrides offers a limited number of partial scholarships to qualified students each year based upon financial need, scholastic merit, leadership achievements, and other factors. Submission of a scholarship application is required to be considered for an award. Nominees who are interested in fundraising to help offset the cost of tuition will have access to our step-by-step suggestions and activities for raising funds, as well as fundraising success stories submitted by past Envision students.
