Yesterday in Miami, Chase the Race 2016 Reporters Gabryelle Matz-Carter and Kaicey Pritts interviewed a wide variety of voices throughout the day leading up to the Democratic Debate. Our reporters spoke to political voices and students and even live streamed on Facebook.
The day began at the Florida International University campus where Kaicey attended a fireside chat with campaign representatives at the DNC Hispanic Caucus Summit. Keynote speaker and United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Julian Castro delivered an empowering message on the importance of the Hispanic vote in this current election. Kaicey had the great opportunity of asking Mayor Castro a question about “What issues are energizing the Latino youth?” Mayor Castro emphasized that the youth and their voice can make a powerful impact for on the next President in office.
For the next stop, the students had the opportunity to visit Miami City Hall, where they both had an opportunity to interview
Commissioner Ken Russell and other city officials about the dynamics of the Democratic race and how the youth are impacting the election process. Among the questions asked during these interviews, the biggest takeaway was that “youth today are concerned about the student debt and future careers. Early is voting is key as it allows your voice to be heard early on. The primaries and caucuses basically help predict the next candidate.” Gabryelle
Later, the students stepped foot on the Miami Dade College, where the monumental Democratic Debate was to be held. Our Chase the Race team went to the Facebook Media Room on campus to check out how the process of live streaming goes during the actual debate and election. It was there that the students had the opportunity to live stream to our own Envision Facebook page (check out some of the archived videos at HERE) That was certainly an exciting experience for the students.
Finally, the Downtown Dems of Miami and our team watched the Democratic Debate at a watch party to commemorate the evening. From campus visits to interviewing students and highly appointed political officials, the day was an incredible example of how the youth momentum is alive and very prevalent in this election. Our student’s coverage of the event will be available on Chase the Race 2016 site. Don’t miss it. And stay tuned as we prepare for the DNC and RNC events for this summer.
