This summer I attended NYLF Law & CSI in Washington, DC. When I landed in Washington D.C., I admit that I was completely homesick and wanted to go home. Despite that, I was excited about being in the D.C. area for the first time and I couldn’t wait to explore. From visiting Venable Law Firm to The National Mall to The U. S. Capitol, every part, every piece of it, will be something that I will remember for the rest of my life.
As I began spending more time with my Motley group, I decided I didn’t want to leave. I had the opportunity to not only explore a career but also meet new people that I might be working with professionally in 10 to 20 years. The experience has help mold me to become not only a future attorney but a leader.
While attending NYLF Law & CSI, I received an interesting call from back home. When I was asked, “Would you like to go to China?,” I was speechless. Eventually I said, “of course.” As I worked to prepare materials for the trip, I was in complete awe that I was chosen to be the first high school junior to attend Ohio Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge’s first student delegation to China. What an opportunity!
When I arrived in Beijing, I was amazed -- the culture, language, and requests to take pictures. I spent the duration of two weeks in the major cities of Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai fully immersed in seminars, workshops, and cultural tours. Visiting China gave me a different insight of a developing country, helped me learned a new language, and also a new way of bargaining. Without the generous funding and sponsorships, it wouldn’t been possible for one of my dreams to become a reality. Studying abroad, no matter the duration, gives you a new world, an insight, and a different perspective.
My summer was remarkable because of attending NYLF Law & CSI and traveling to China as a Student Delegate. Both experiences taught me a great deal. I am so grateful to have received the nomination from my school and the support of Minds Matter of Cleveland to attend this program.
