By Mikayla Kelz, Iowa Caucus Reporter
If I could use one word to describe my experience at the Iowa Caucus, it would be inspirational. I learned so much just by going to presidential candidates rallies and talking to supporters or listeners of them. It made me think how easy it is for other youth to gain access to these types of events. I think this year’s presidential race is definitely one to watch.
With multiple types of personalities and differing viewpoints, it really makes this campaign come down to who can relate best with their supporters, and encourage an increase in political participation by going out to vote. In the past, political participation has been the lowest throughout the youngest generation.
This year I have noticed a larger amount of youth canvassing, and speaking at colleges about the candidates. I would highly encourage each individual to get involved in this presidential race, because whoever you chose will be a large factor in your life now, and in the future.
This year is the year for change. The millennials are ready to have their voice heard, but the question is are the candidates ready to address the pressing issues of today’s youth?
About Mikayla
This 11th grader from Wisconsin grew up around politics, helping her father in his campaigns for local government. She has founded a group called Teens Talk Politics, whose goal is to more deeply involve the younger generation in politics. After interviewing Wisconsin politicians and people on the street, the group promotes their work through social media and videos on their YouTube channel. The Teens Talk Politics experience has helped Mikayla in her role in Chase the Race 2016, where has continued addressing the needs of America’s youth.
